Just the Basic Facts
Oct. 7th, 2006 02:55 amWichita Falls, TX held a Lloyd Ruby festival, to honour the man while he's still around to appreciate it. My strongest memory of him is from the 1969 Five Hundred, when his crew waved him out of the pit with the fuel hose still attached, and tore the side of the car away, while he was leading.
They didn't used to show the Five Hundred live - it was always shown late that night on Channel Four (an independent Indianapolis station). I remember watching the replay in the dark with my Uncle Billy. Ruby was in tears, just looking stunned while the crew tried to see if there was any possible way of repairing the car.
Stuff like that happened to him constantly. He was like a living symbol for futility at one point. A great driver, but if something stupid was going to happen, it would happen to Ruby.

The summer of 1969 seems so strange and far-away now, but in some ways it feels like yesterday too.

I remember drinking Sprite out of the orange and green steel cans that summer, because they sponsored Wally Dallenbach, and you could get a variety of racing premiums from them.
*****
Soda cans used to be very sturdy, straight-sided steel cylinders with a weld running up one side. Sometimes we used them for a sort of stilt - you'd punch holes in the side, and put string through them, them use that to hold them on your feet. It was fun to stomp around and leave circular marks.
*****
In 2006, I can sit here at work, and follow qualifying live from Japan on my computer. It's a very different world than 1969.
*****
The first session times are looking more than a little ominous for Renault.
*****
The Mars Reconnaissance Observer can see one of the rovers!
The panoramas from Victoria crater are how I imagined Mars would look. Powdery, rippled drifts covering sedimentary outcroppings.
*****
Forza Massa! Toyota must be pleased. I'm sure Renault isn't.
Edit:

Flavio Briattore doesn't look pleased.
