You people who actually understand Ubuntu/Debian...

I've got Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). I'm using the Synaptic package manager. I'd just sort of assumed that it was getting information about current package versions from whoever distributed the package. I've got universal and omniversal repositories enabled, so I'd think it should have access to whatever servers keep that information. I can't find any particular controls for updating package versions in Synaptic itself.

Tonight I discovered that while Hewlett/Packard is distributing their HPLIP package in version 2.8.10, Synaptic (my copy, at least) is reporting 2.8.2 as the latest version.

What am I missing here? Any insight at all would be welcome, even guesses.

Update: I'm watching "Moral Orel". Rod Parsley (one of the sorts of fundamentalist preachers who 'performs miracles' onstage) has bought an advertisement for his New Year's Eve show. I have to guess whoever signed that contract had only the sketchiest information about the show :)
