Ah, the mid-70s! How many painful debacles began by invoking the name of Evel Knievel?

In retrospect, I have to wonder what made that so fascinating? There was a national mania for jumping motorcycles (and other vehicles) over things. It seems kind of bizarre now, but at the time it was compelling. Jumping a motorcycle remains an interesting stunt, and would be fun to watch even today*, but back then, there was just this obsession with the idea.
*The moreso when the people setting it up lack the ability and/or foresight to do the necessary calculations beforehand...
