Meanwhile, in America...
Mar. 8th, 2014 11:31 amSo, I came home from work early yesterday with a mild fever, feeling cold and shaky. I went to bed covered up tightly, sweated rather a lot, and by evening was feeling pretty good, apart from being kind of achy and having a scratchy throat. Today I feel fine, so who knows what that was.
*****
I ended up awake and reading in bed for much of the small hours, predictably enough. Around one or so there was a stream sirens going north on the highway, and then fifteen or so minutes later returning in scattered order. As the siren was going both ways, I have to assume ambulances, so someone's Friday night wasn't as enjoyable as they'd hoped.
A few hours later, several sirens approached, then abruptly stopped, then I heard the police helicopter orbitting very low for a while. One assumes it to have been some nearby outbreak of villainy, although I stayed in bed, and didn't even look out the window to see.
I wish I could describe the way I felt lying in bed listening to the things going on outside. It wasn't really a secure feeling, but I wasn't the least bit worried either. Unpleasant things were happening, and quite nearby, but they weren't going to affect me. I was in bed with my book. That's normally the most comfortably safe feeling, but last night it wasn't, for some reason. I had more of a spacial awareness of myself, and the bad things happening around me at a distance, rather than my normal 'hidden and safe' reaction. It was a strange, striking feeling, but not unpleasant. I'll put it down to some lingering effect of being ill, I suppose.
