Like Endless Rain into a Paper Cup...

That was a remarkably sullen and self-pitying "resignation" speech by Al Franken, made the more interesting by the assertion that he intends to resign in the future, but not right away. I'm guessing that he either thinks he can ride this out, or else he's going to try to take someone else out with him.
For what it's worth, I do not like or trust Al Franken, and I shall be glad to see the last of him, but this is basically a silly-season witch-hunt that has nothing to do with his fitness to be a Senator.
I have never understood why some people (and primarily those on the left) insist that congressmen have to be paragons of virtue. We all know the kind of person who actually wants to run the country isn't normal, and has no real sense of limitations or morals as it applies to themselves. With rare, rare exceptions, it takes a sociopath to be comfortable in a job like that. It's a long-established meme. We joke about it constantly. We make them swear on the Bible that they'll do an honest job and not steal everything in sight, and then we pretend to believe them when they talk about how they're humbly praying to God to be worthy of our trust, when we all know that the only prayer they'll ever utter (if that) is not to get caught or fuck up too badly.
The very best we can hope for under a system like this is a man like Trump, who's so rich he doesn't need anything more, and so damned arrogant and proud of himself that he'll try to do a good job just because that supports his self-image. It is not a political system of which to be proud.
