I came home from the store to find a Sparrow hen (one of my colony sparrows, I imagine) dead on the road in front of the driveway. House Sparrows are actually quite good about adopting orphans. It's one of the things that makes them so successful as a species. After the babies haven't been fed for a while, their cheeping changes, and then young unmated adults, and sometimes even mated males, will feed them. It's usually not as good as having a dedicated parent feeding them, but a surprising number will make it to adulthood that way. If she had unhatched eggs, though, those are gonna die.
Later: The "E" box hen, the only one that I know for a fact is sitting eggs, is safe and sound. I maybe ought to directly check the others, but for the moment, it looks good.
