An interesting article on Enkidu's transition from Animal to Man in "Gilgamesh". I'm not sure that I fully agree with the author's contention that the meaning of humanity to the Sumerians was found in the city, and in taking one's place in the city - the Temple Prostitute took him initially, not to Uruk of the ramparts, but rather to a rural village full of shepherds, to work some of the edges off of him, and to get him used to eating bread and drinking beer. Also, (and debateably to the point - I can see arguments for either side) the Prostitute's initial hold on Enkidu was based very firmly on having sex with him - lots of it. That seems very Animal to me, but that may be a cultural perspective thing. The Temple Prostitutes were very much part of city life, after all.

It's "Miss Atomic Bomb 1954"! I love the crown! The whole thing comes across as kinda surreal to me, as I'm conditioned by cartoons to see a mushroom cloud emerging from someone's head as either a sign that they're about to go on the rampage, or else that their brain has become completely broken.

Pope's goin' to Iraq. I often disagree with the Pope, but there's no doubt that he's a brave and holy man, who's fully intent on doing what he thinks is right. I hope this turns out well.
