Neil Stephenson's 'The Diamond Age' had nanomachine babbage engines as the computers of the future.

It was kind of funny -- in the book the wires attached to them pumped in not just electricity by micronized ice cubes to cool them down, so the computer would literally be steaming as it worked...

For the big machines anyway, the little portable ones were all efficient and stuff.
