From The Comics Reading Library comes this comic book ad from 1954:

Words fail me. I think we can safely conclude that Jesus purging the moneylenders from the Temple was not the favourite Bible story of whoever thought this up.

Back in those days I've seen the exact same ad and copy to sell some other merchandise door-to-door that wasn't religious in nature.

It is not just crass, it is also exceedingly illogical. How does sending this guy money fight the various social ills described in the upper left-hand corner?

I notice one thing the giant godly fist -isn't- slamming down on is "greed." Coincidence? >.>

I am not sure why a religious group is offering the "Roy Rogers Flash Camera." Who would want a picture of Roy Rogers flashing? Besides Dale Evans, that is.

Dang. You really should share this on the Vintage Ads lj community.

Wow, where did you find this?

I've seen the same thing bazillions of times, yeah. It's probably the same company, even. This one just amazed me because of the religious tie-in.

Well, I think the moral improvement is supposed to stem from people hanging the "Religious Wall Motto Plaques" on their walls. That's what he wants you to sell.

A salient observation indeed!

Do they even let you have firesticks there? And I need your address to send you that software, too.

I'm not on it, but you're entirely welcome to repost it there if you like.

I notice as well that one of the prizes is a 'vanity set'...

It's a high school fundraiser crossed with A Christmas Story! This is priceless!

Love the ad! I remember ones like it when I was young. I like the phrase "Serve the Lord and get prizes". The prosperity gospel tele-evangelists still do that--"Send us money and get this great prize"

Those Red Ryder BB guns were real, and apparently quite common too. There were still a few of them around when I was a kid :)

I thought of televangelists too, yeah. It's very much the same pitch. This was the back-cover ad in an absolutely lurid horror comic too, which kind of weirds me out.
