The used water was completely black when I poured it out of the tank, and the very bottom bit was kind of sludgy.

Actually, I prefer that outcome, but what I usually get is yellow water that smells of dog pee.

I wish I knew of a better manufacturer of carpet washers than Bissell.  They're sold everywhere, but don't last very long.
