I think you may be right. Looking back at my 2008 Olympic posts, I note that China won an unprecedented number of gold medals (http://xolo.livejournal.com/224231.html), the "Great Haul of China", as it was being called here. By London we were most assuredly focussing on total numbers. We tend to be kind of whiny and hypocritical about stuff like that.
