The photos look like the ones from my 6th grade history books, considered current in 1966- sadly these are the images my mind conjures up when I think of the Soviet Union.
Glass coins? Fascinating! So much metal went to the War effort. I used to have a dog license tag from 1943 that was steel like the pennies.
