And, someone else discovers E.M. Forster's "The Machine Stops". I first read it at about 13 or 14, as one of the 'retro' stories in a Perry Rhodan monthly. Forrest J. Ackerman was the editor for the American editions, and a tireless promoter of Golden Age and prior SF.

If you've not read it, you should. There's a link in the article. It's quite an amazing piece of work, in a number of ways. Even if you don't much care for old SF, this is a classic.

I did not realize that story was written by E M  “A Passage to India” Forster.  I’d have said Olaf Stapledon, were I asked.
