Remdesivir
Jun. 30th, 2020 01:50 pmI just finished writing the POTUS, my Senators, and my Representative.
I'm writing with regard to Gilead Science's proposed price of $2340 to provide Americans with a course of treatment of its drug Remdesivir. This seemed high to me, especially for a drug for which the US government partially funded the R&D. True outrage didn't set in until I learned that they're licensing the drug for as little as $66 for a course of treatment in India. Americans are being milked to subsidize treatment for people from other countries. There's no nicer way to say it. Such pricing schemes should be illegal, and I hope that you will take immediate action to remedy the situation. Americans should not have to pay for our own healthcare, and for that of other countries as well.
I realize that the production costs of the drug are going to be higher for Gilead than for their licensees, and certainly I'm not averse to Gilead making a profit. This much of a difference, though, is ridiculous. If this seems wrong to you, then I hope that you'll write or phone your own politicians. This sort of thing can be stopped if enough people care about it.
