In a rather stunning display of incompetence, I shut my left paw in the car door. Nothing is broken so far as I can tell, and I'm typing okay, if a little gingerly, but there's definitely some type of minor damage, as the fingers are sore and red, and feel hot at certain points. The bone may be chipped.
Interestingly (to me, at least), as I shut the door, I realized that my paw was in the way before it closed, but had insufficient time to yank it completely out. This is the period that I long ago dubbed the "Ohnopause", that period after inadvertently taking an irrevocable action that you've just realized will hurt, and the pain. IMHO, it's a good word, and should be more widely used.
Also interesting to me was that my immediate reaction was 'my paw!'. Under serious stress, I thought of the member as 'paw' rather than 'hand', which is obscurely pleasing to me.
