Woohoo Texas!! If they actually do secede (and I think there's a good possibility it'll happen), then I expect most of the Midwest and Great Plains will be right behind them.

As I recall - being too lazy to look it up - Texas does still have the peculiar right to divide into four States if needed for voting in Washington.

It's traditional for alt-history authors to show the Republic of Texas alongside and independent of the modern Confederate States of America.  This is foolish; there would be no need.

(On the other hand, I saw one where crackers and snowbirds united and seceded Florida from the CSA! - who basically just shrugged, Whatever…)

It was called A More Perfect Union, and it had a premise I've never seen elsewhere:  That Lincoln recalled John Hancock's comment about setting brother against brother, and the USA bearing the mark of Cain, and responded to Secession by saying, "Awright, everybody calm down.  Let em squawk and flap - they'll cool off and come back."  In short, there was no War Between the States - which had surprising consequences, both civil and military!  USA and CSA were more like Canada and USA - which did make serious efforts to woo Canada into joining the Union, for a while.

I don't think the book did enough with the notion, but States that had never experienced that slaughter and hate had no wish to now, either, and that figured into the plot.
