A pretty good day, withal. I actually went out and did something with friends, for a change, instead of just sitting around. I came to the realization midweek that for all that I sit here and pity myself because I'm in Ohio instead of California, it wouldn't do me the least bit of good to be in Los Angeles or anywhere else, if I didn't do the stuff that's there. I don't do anything here, except sit around the house and go shopping. Apart from the stores, I might as well be in some hellish little farming town where every single person knows your name.

So... This afternoon I went to see 'The Triplets of Belleville' with Babs and Sonic. It's pretty good - quite unusual, the sort of film that just doesn't come around outside of cities and college towns. There's little to no dialogue, and what there is isn't important. The story's masterfully told through pure animation. I loved the old lady and her potato mashers >:)

We saw it at the Drexel Grandview, an easily-overlooked old theatre a little bit west of the Short North (the gay district). I'd never been to Grandview before, but I liked it immediately. It's full of little odd stores, including a sort of natural history store that we spent a half hour or so poking through after the movie, all full of fossils, and minerals, and birding supplies.

When we got home I'd missed Max (either his watch is fast, or mine slow) so I wasn't able to unload the couch on Thalyn. We'll need to do that some other time.

I spent the evening making a corned beef and vegetables roast, and setting up the Temple of the Penguin. Ever since I moved last weekend, I've been getting by on the single W98 machine that the cable installer set up for me. Now I've got the whole set reassembled and running, with all the peripherals, and I'm back on the Mandrake workstation. The apartment is about five degrees warmer now :)

Schumacher won the Australian GP with Barrichello second, as expected. There was one uncertain moment four laps from the end, when he was working on lapping the fifth place car, and he suddenly backed way off. I've little doubt something was wrong with the engine - he was being very ginger with it for the rest of the race. At the press conference afterward he gave a cock and bull story about not having to push those last four laps because Alonzo in the Renault (in 3rd) had backed off. That's well and good, except that Alonzo was a minute and twenty seconds behind Schumacher at that point. I can't really imagine that Ferrari was worried about him making up 20 seconds a lap.

ESPN continued their habit of showing the race from 10 years ago before the GP. Tonight it was Brazil, 1994, the last time at Interlagos. Schumacher won that one too, driving for Bennetton. Jean Alesi managed third for Ferrari, mainly because Senna and a few others didn't finish. The times have changed :)

Max came by, and we finally got the couch and desk over to Thalyn's place. Thalyn's got a huge mastiff named Francis. He was all hostile and barky and stuff at first, since he didn't know either one of us, but as soon as he realized we were Thalyn's friends then he whined, and was all sorry and embarassed, which was cute in a dog that large.

Thalyn lives in what's basically a huge hippie house, down in the University district, with artwork all over the walls. I used to spend a lot of time in places like this in the 70s :) I also got to see the Big Basket o' Kitties, five of them, just born yesterday, all cuddled up with the momcat. Momcat's got this cute, cat-shaped waterdish.

I'm debating if I want to put the waterbed back together. Flaster never did much like it, the way it slops around. Now that I'm sleeping on a pallette again, he's taken to curling up with me to sleep, which he didn't much do with the waterbed.
