Many spoilers follow:

Tempest Shadow: Damn!... O.o Gilda is still Best Pony, but Tempest is a solid competitor. MLP in general seems to have an above-average number of insecure antagonists who feel themselves to have been slighted in one way or another, and they are going to take that out on the world (and almost always do an outstanding job of it as well). Those stories resonate for me, as that's one of my larger character faults, although I'm better than I was. From many years in various incarnations of the fandom, I think MLP tends to attract that sort of person, although I'm not sure why.

From comparing notes with a long-term Care Bears fan, it would seem that when Ponies lose it, we tend toward drama, martyrdom, and carefully-crafted ways to make everyone miserable. When Care Bears lose it, they often tend toward death threats, which ended more than one CB board back in the day. There's probably a sociology doctoral thesis there for someone.

Violence: A lot more violence than I had expected, although it was always appropriate to the scene. The windmill rampage was nicely crunchy, and I was impressed when Tempest blew up the pirate ship. Still, I didn't expect either scene to result in actual casualties (nor did they). A bit later, on the beach, when the monster grabbed Spike, and then the camera cut away for a few seconds and returned to show the monster running about in a panic trying to beat out his flaming arm, I cackled. That was pure slapstick, and excellently timed. I had to wonder as well if the burned up fur from his arm would shower down in front of Celestia.

I was probably more surprised than I should have been when during the final assault on the castle Spike was setting people on fire left and right. It wasn't really inappropriate - they'd kidnapped Twilight, and for all he knew she was being tortured or killed, so yeah, he wanted to break their defenses as rapidly as possible, and wasn't being too squeamish about how he did it. Still, it was a bit of an eyebrow-raiser when the one guard, while running for his life, stumbled and fell, and Spike just lit him on fire big-time, no hesitation. He was badly pissed, and frightened for Twilight, so I don't really see that as out-of-character under the circumstances. I'm still a bit surprised that they went there, though.

Also, did anyone see Grubber (Tempest's porcupine sidekick) after the pirates pulled him into the Trojan Cake? Maybe he was onscreen again and I just didn't notice, but I think not.

The Storm King's demise was poetically perfect - hoist on his own petard, and with the assistance of Tempest, whom he'd gone unnecessarily out of his way to antagonize. One wonders how he managed to accumulate and keep such a vast array of minions when he was capable of such foolish behaviour.

This is good to hear. I've become quite jaded with the TV series. The 'Trixie/Starlight Show' plus the general dumbing-down of the writing the past couple of seasons has really alienated me from something that used to bring me the greatest joy. I was so looking forward to the movie since it was announced, but I lost that enthusiasm some time ago. I still don't think I can muster the motivation to see it in the theatre, but I do now look forward to seeing it on home video when it comes out.

Huh. There've been plenty of terrible episodes in season 7, but I mostly like the Trixie and Starlight ones. They kind of ruined the mane 6 (and the crusaders) by completing all their story arcs.

Except Applejack I guess.
