A Very Good Day
May. 10th, 2021 05:15 pmSo, a friend who had a severe fall Friday (landed on his head, of all things :P) and wasn't expected to live, is now awake and breathing on his own. Ich freude mich!

Back in mid-February, the artist Likeshine started a "Birds' Family Portrait" project, in which she proposed to draw colour portraits of as many Bird and Bird-related furs as possible. I learned about it at the very tail-end of April, after the project had grown far beyond the bounds she had envisioned, she had injured her hand, and had announced that she was ending it. To make a long story short, she was kind enough to add me anyway!

Here's the bit with me in it. There're somewhere around 200-300 Birds altogether. Stuff like this makes me ridiculously happy, beyond my ability to explain.

Date: 2021-05-11 03:52 pm (UTC)There was a guy a couple houses down who was missing two fingers on one hand. His car was used in Driver's Ed videos back in the'70s, don't know if I ever saw it: he was hit by a train. At first he wasn't going to live. Then he was going to be permanently paralyzed. Then he was certainly going to be seriously impaired. He was walking and talking and leading a pretty normal life as long as I knew him. Eventually he moved away and his parents passed, which cut his ties to the neighborhood.
He was quite the cut-up. He'd hold his hands out and shout "Give me eight!" I've had five operations on my right thumb, so my reply was "Nine and a half is the best I can offer."

Date: 2021-05-11 05:25 pm (UTC)For whatever reason, I was just thinking about drivers' ed yesterday. I took it early summer of '76. Our school had what was, at that time, a fairly nice, high-tech setup, purchased only a few years before. There were 16 cars which looked like (and may have been converted from) bumper cars, each with a full set of controls. The instructor's station had analogue dials to show what each car was doing. He'd play these special movies that were keyed to the equipment, which would cause warning lights to show on his panel if someone reacted wrongly.
The thing was, though, after all of the obvious care and money that went into the equipment, they cut corners in making the movies, using only a limited set of 'bad guy' cars. By the third session or so, you learnt to recognize the green station wagon (a woodside - I remember that thing yet), the delivery truck, the yellow sedan, and the guy on the motorcycle, and got ready anytime you saw them coming. On the one paw, it kind of diminished the effectiveness. but on the other, I've yet to actually run anyone over, so...
