Yay! A zinc-based double-ended metallocene with a Zn-Zn bond!

I must say, the phrase a landmark discovery in the chemistry of zinc cracks me up for some reason.

Yeah, that made me giggle.

That's neat and all, but I want to see the Zinc-Xenon bond now. I imagine that fluorine will be involved.

I'm chemistry illiterate. What does it mean? Was this hard to do? Why are people searching for this seemingly elusive bond/

At the moment it's really just a curiousity more than anything. This particular class of chemical is often used as a catalyst for making complex, custom designed polymers, but this particular variant won't be much good for that. I'm guessing that little useful will come of this, but I may be badly mistaken.

It was done by accident, if I understand correctly. I'd be surprised if anyone was actually searching for it, at least in the sense of having a funded project to find it. It's just cool, because no-one has seen that happen before.
