For all my Lapine friends: Family with Rabbit

Pre-sliced bread, cotton candy, hot dogs, and the ice cream cone were all introduced at the 1904 World's Fair.

Electric cooking devices had been in existence for several years prior, but became popular as a result of their exposure at the fair. The toaster was the first common electric kitchen appliance.

The original Ferris Wheel from the 1896 Columbian Exposition was recycled for the 1904 fair. After the fair it was blown up for scrap. The main axle weighed 70 tons, and was too heavy to be economically salvaged at the prevailing scrap prices. They dug a trench, rolled it in and buried it.

During WWII there was an effort to find and dig up the axle for the steel, but they never did find it. Recently there's been an another attempt to find it for the archeological value, which turned out equally fruitless. Somewhere under that park there's a 70 ton piece of steel that no-one can find.

I wonder if there might be a market for a service to install false memories? You could have the satisfaction of having done something without actually doing it.

I think an interesting distributed science project would be to install neutrino detectors down private water wells. If you had enough of them, you could conceivably convert the earth into a sort of direction-finding neutrino detector, since some of them would probably shoot a shallow chord through the earth, and hit multiple detectors in succession.

Something's happening with the proposed Phoenix World's Fair. I'm not entirely sure what. They had been proposing to have a distributed fair in 2008, scattered across several sites, with the lame-ass theme of "Sustainability". Suddenly all mention of sustainability is missing from the website, and they're talking about a celebration of Progress, with the entire fair in Phoenix again. Best of all, some urban redevelopment group with a $55M federal grant seems to be involved now. The concept now seems to be to build permanent Fair structures that can become community buildings afterward, and act as anchors for urban development. On the other hoof, there's no mention of a date anymore, which could be good or bad. The odd thing is that this just kind of happened without any mention on the announcements list that I'm aware of. I'm guessing there was a powergrab of some sort.

The other day I bought a "Casper the Friendly Ghost" compilation tape. Lo and behold, it had the cartoon "Good Boos Tonight", which is one that stuck with me from my childhood. I'd long since forgotten the name, but I recall the cartoon. Casper is sitting by his tombstone, reading a book about 'Animal Friends'. He goes off and befriends a Fox, who immediately starts getting chased by a hunter. So far it's a pretty normal Casper cartoon.

The part that always sort of weirded me was at the end, when Casper's trying to shield the Fox, and the hunter actually shoots through Casper and kills the Fox. Casper takes his body to the cemetery, buries him in a little grave beside his own, and then the Fox's ghost pops up out of the ground and they go off to play. I was never quite sure if I liked that cartoon or not. I'm still not sure.

There's bits of humour in Casper that I totally missed as a child. He swears to guard stuff with his life, he exclaims "As I live and breathe!", he tries to commit suicide, etc..

I really used to enjoy Casper when I was very young, but then as I got a little older I realized that he was dead, and then it got kind of weird. Somewhere along the line that ceased to be a problem, and now I like him again.

That doofus Ecclestone's on a roll again, and took Silverstone off the F1 calendar, apparently because the FIA offices at the track aren't as nice as they are at the newer venues. That's got to be one of the stupidest reasons ever. On the other hoof, this is the same man who tried to stop Schumacher from wearing his World Champion hat until the formal announcement is made at the end of the season.

Chechnya seems remarkable for its silence these days. There's not been a bit of news out of there for the last three weeks or so. Sucks to be a Chechen these days, I'm sure.

YES!! There's a new John Waters movie out - "Dirty Shame". It's the story of a woman who gets hit on the head, and becomes a nymphomaniac. She then joins a religious cult composed entirely of perverts and sex maniacs. It's a dirty shame Divine is dead - I can just imagine her in this.

I've seen stories in the (European) media, that Russia is a bad place to be Chechen these days. I'm not sure what Putin & Co are going to do about the Chechnya issue, but I don't think there's much sympathy for them in the world, these days.

I did not know that about the Columbian Expo ferris wheel. That's rather amusing. I've probably driven right over the bloody thing.

How can you lose 70 tons of iron???

I'm sure lawyers would love such a service. Ever seen 'Total Recall'?
*****
I don't think there is enough water surrounding the detectors for the idea to work, but it's an interesting thought.

The idea of World's Fairs seems to be losing favor. Especially when you have a virtually permanent World's Fair in EPCOT.

I remember that cartoon! For some reason, though, I was never fond of Harveytoons. And the movie was awful.

I assume this is racing talk?

I think the Chechen terrorists realize that they did not do much to help their cause. Everyone else just wants to forget it happened.

Yeah...with Divine, all shame is dirty.

"I wonder if there might be a market for a service to install false memories? You could have the satisfaction of having done something without actually doing it."

Viz Philip K. Dick's short story in F&SF, 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale', which was turned into the rather awful Arnoldfest 'Total Recall' which (naturally) missed the point entirely...
