So, here I sit in the wee hours watching the curling team. That looks like it'd be fun to play, but it's one of those sports you never see outside the Olympics. The stadium is just about deserted, which is a pity. The rocks make a cool *bonk* noise when they hit.

ferret whimpers, no TV in the ferret-den, but I doubt you're watching regular TV. I'm still LIVID from the way NBC botched their coverage of the Salt Lake City opening ceremonies, with barely ANY closeups of the lovely animal costumes skating around: cougars AND coyotes!

Any nice mascots this year?

When my TV was working, I watched as the USA women's team made their winning move. Jubilation! And the friend who loves curling and is on a local team ... he was not watching!

I remember watching some show telling how the stones are 42 pounds (yes, the answer to The Universe and EVERYTHING!) and come from one specific quarry in the USA (well, for the US teams).

As to the empty stadium: sadly not all sports get many fans, or are apparently held at "odd hours". The laundromat near me has the satellite-tv sets mostly tuned to Spanish channels (Univision, Telemundo) so I see a lot of soccer. Many of the games are in nearly empty stadiums.

I skipped the opening ceremonies, because they've been so sucky of late, and lo and behold, they apparently featured Fellini, people in flaming hats, AND a Ferrari F1 car doing rings. I should have expected a good show from the Italians.

They've chosen thoroughly stupid mascots. They look like retarded people with marshmallows for heads. I have no idea what it is about the Olympics that seems to produce either really great mascots (the Australian and Salt Lake City ones come to mind) or else ones that you just hate on sight (Athens, Atlanta, etc).

My paternal grandparents were champion curlers in the state of Wisconsin, and my father was on his high school curling team in northern Wisconsin. Do high school curling teams exist anywhere any more?

Haven't a clue. Certainly they didn't have them where I went to high school (southern Indiana).

I've heard that curling has replaced hockey as the national sport of Canada.

Haven't a clue here either. It's entirely possible.
