A veritable primer on how to annoy and offend a wide variety of foreigners.
I strongly suspect that "English culture places a high value on the size of a child's head. When first being introduced to children you have not met before, it is seen as disrespectful not to make two or three compliments in this area." was placed as a trap for the credulous.

And now it's Armistice Day once again. I'm haunted by the idea that all of the 20th century's major problems, the ones that we're still trying to sort out today, can be traced back to that pointless war. When the final history of the West is written, WWI may still prove to be what sunk us.
If could undo one thing in history, I'm not sure if it'd be WWI, or the fall of Rome.

They've decided to postpone counting the Pryce/Kilroy ballots here* so the election workers can watch the OSU/Michigan game. Having lived here almost five years, I can kind of see that :)
* The election's probably going to be decided on provisional ballots, hence the need for a late count.

I'll have to make sure I have cash (I'm normally a debit card person) in case I meet with any poppy sellers today.

The Home Despot had their Christmas lights on display today. At least half of them were LED lights. In a way, it makes me sad, as the trend is plainly going to LED lights, and they just don't have the same colour output or luminosity as incandescents. It's like the difference between a pure tone, and a musical note.
On the other hoof... They had blue LED lights there. They were the most pure, saturated blues I have ever seen, like laser light in little bulbs. You couldn't get that colour with an incandescent. It's a blue so clear it's almost as if it weren't really there. I'm tempted to get some of those, and use them with a blue tree and indigo tinsel.
The LEDs come in non-standard sizes too - there're C4 and C2 textured cones ("strawberries") available. They've even started making LED lights in the shape of fairy lights. IMHO that doubly misses the point, since the visible filament is part of what's nice about those. They're interesting as novelty lights, though.

I'm always vaguely embarassed when I spend a half hour in the Despot, wandering through the whole thing, and come out with a single 4 cent machine screw (what I went for).

Giant Weasel has no fewer than eight trees set up already amidst the beer display. A few more go up each day. Apparently brewers consider a Christmas tree an essential display item these days. They've not lit them yet, unfortunately.
I'm already in love with the Coors tree*. It's eight feet tall, and bright red with two sizes of red lights (C7 and fairy). I so want one of these.
* The beer itself is among the worst on earth, unfortunately.

Date: 2006-11-12 11:57 am (UTC)First, the intention is LIGHTING: the glow and the colors, not the technology how it's done. LEDs are good at giving really pure colors.
Second is safety. No more candles, large bulbs, large GLASS bulbs to break, no more 120 volt lines everywhere.
My favorite xmas lite sets are those with large plastic crystals and finally LED sets are going in that direction instead of just bare LEDs. I look forward to seeing 5th Ave this December when all the ornaments and fancy windows are done!

Date: 2006-11-14 09:59 am (UTC)Crystally lights seem to be popular again, yeah. I've still got a couple of the old GE "Lighted Ice" bulbs from the 60s. One completely new item I've seen this year is small clear spheres filled with crystals, lit from within by LEDs.

Another good one would be the pervention of Japanese militirism.
Rome was decadent and rotten for years. The Fall of Rome needed to happen ultimately - and besides, the Byzantines kept 'civilization' going until the 14th century. The Fall of the Republic, if prevented, would have been a better Rome.
