Make your own Eames bucket chair. There's something to be said for any project that involves using "Domes of Silence".

I need to clean out my apartment, probably dump about half the stuff, and make my own furniture, to my own designs and specs. I had started on that, once, when I lived in Akron.

Fon will give you a free wireless router, if you live in America, and are willing to share your internet connection with other Fon users. They're trying to build a worldwide roaming network. By hosting a wireless access point, you can then use Fon wireless all around the world for free :)

Around 1997 or so I came within inches of setting up my own dialup ISP, from a mixture of wanting a dedicated fast connection, and feeling that the little farm town where I lived deserved local dialup service. Every so often I have these altruistic impulses.

They hope to eventually make money selling routers, WiFi cards and network access. For that to work, though, they have to have some sort of an initial network in place, or nobody will buy their service. That's why they're giving away routers to start with, is to bootstrap the process. It's cheaper to give out free routers and let people place and manage them than it is to set up an administered network.

ferret'll give FON a try, but only if the public area can't access my provate stuff, either by the router blocking it, or I'll have to set up my own router to assure privacy (something I ought to do eventually just to learn setting up a Linux/BSD based router). If only they could've taken over the Richochet network before it was pulled down (WiFi on utility poles for metropolitan-area netoworks).

The Fon router's going to be occupying its own subnet, and be outside the firewall, at least until I gain confidence in it.

I remember visiting your apartment in Akron while Erfy the fox-boy still lived there. He doesn't remember me anymore. I wonder if he still looks as young as he used to.
