Yes, Linux pwns!

I have to decide if I'm going to go to the next Mandrake release, or switch to Ubuntu. It's looking like prolly Ubuntu at this point.

Dogs lust after Hugh Grant.

The Southern Theater downtown is going to present "The Marriage of Figaro" in March. I may or may not go.

Columbus has a surprising amount of opera. Columbus really is a thoroughly civilized place to live, although it doesn't get much attention. There's all this good stuff here that nobody knows about.

I'm somewhat bemused by this Anna Nicole Smith. She seems to be one of these odd modern celebrities whose fame is recursive. So far as I can tell, she's famed simply for being famous.

Does the Linux picture represent that Linux is more interactive, powerful & futuristic than Windows or Mac? If so, I agree. The programmer in me likes an O/S that is customizable & open source.

I remember when people were celebrities because they actually did something important. I was initially amused by all this news coverage for a dead blonde bimbo, but now it's getting annoying.

I think they're making a point about Linux being a nerd magnet, actually :)

I was only marginally aware of her before she died. I initially thought she must be an actress or something, but apparently she wasn't even that, except in some minimal sense.

Well then they (whoever "they" are) should have picked someone other than "The Tron Guy" to represent Linux, because he evokes the description "dork" rather than nerd. :-P

Byte your tongue. Tron kicks tail. Just got a chance a couple weekends ago to play an old Tron arcade machine too. I still sucked at it, but it was fun.

I liked the movie Tron. But "The Tron Guy" is some fat d00d in a Tron suit. He even thinks he can sue people for using his "likeness" even though its obviously not an original concept and he's surely no Bruce Boxleitner. All the more reason not use his image to represent something that's actually good.

Byte your tongue

Hee. ;-)

Dude! The Tron Guy rocks! If you line up these three guys, and ask which one I can best identify with, it's Tron Guy, hands down. :D

I honestly had no idea who the woman was other than her name appeared in the news often. Never knew quite why, but I think you're right - she was just someone who was famed for being famous. I also think the only people who are truly sorry she's gone are the media, which is why they are milking her death for every drop they can squeeze out of it. I only pity her baby daughter. I have a feeling the hacks are never going to leave that little girl alone as long as she lives...

The first I was really aware of her was before Christmas, when her son died. I filed the name away under 'actor', since that's usually what it means if everyone else knows who someone is and I don't.

Same here, tho when I read her bio I did vaguely recall the story about the young model who married the ancient billionaire several years ago. I didn't know about any of the rest, tho, probably because of my lack of interest in television and popular culture in general...

When I first heard, I had her confused with that one sometime friend of Paris Hilton. What's her name? Jessica Simpson was it?

Anna Nicole Smith may be dead, but at least she's not Paris Hilton.

In all honesty, I do have to admit that I sometimes follow her exploits. Most celebrities are just boring, but Paris Hilton fucks up in ways that take you by surprise.

Know of any good linux help sites? I don't know anything about linux, and most of the websites are oriented to experts

Not really. When I go to a help site, it's usually because I'm having a particular issue or want examples for a command. My chief crutch is a Unix command summary book, "Unix for Dummies Quick Reference" (http://www.amazon.com/Dummies-Quick-Reference-Margaret-Levine/dp/0764503014/sr=1-3/qid=1171136604/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/103-5789311-8497440?ie=UTF8&s=books). For your first Linux system, I'd say the most important thing is to use the KDE desktop environment. When you're running in GUI mode, it's not much different than having some quirky version of Windows that comes from an alternate universe where everyone is obsessed with potassium and penguins. Everything will look familiar, especially if you have the "Redmond" theme. A lot of installs will try to steer you to Gnome, which is nice when you're used to it, but rather sparse if you've only used Windows.

Try either Mandrake (Mandriva) or Ubuntu. I can vouch for Mandrake being very easy to install, and Ubuntu looks promising as well. I'm pondering a switch because Mandrake is becoming a very bloated distribution. Ubuntu is small and tight. Ubuntu offers an option to boot and run from the CD without actually installing, which is nice for testing against your hardware, and lets you get a feel for the OS as well. I don't recall ATM if Mandrake does or not - I think they do, though.

You might install Linux as a dual-boot too, so you can go back and forth until you get used to it. You can always get help from people on the MU*s too. Do expect to learn about your computer, too. My statement about it being a nerd magnet is true.

Yes, they do. It's called MandrivaOne, and is here:

ROFL! Some celebrities have all the luck.

And if the opera ever does Janacek's "The Cunning Little Vixen" I may have to make a trip out there. If I can find a decent airfare at the time. Hopefully. I just missed it a couple years ago; it opened in San Jose the day after I moved to Phoenix.

And if you like Janacek in general, the Met is having 'Jenufa' as their opera broadcast this Saturday.
