A Non-Tuesday
Mar. 9th, 2007 07:40 amSo, Loganberry and you other bus-riding Brits: what's your opinion of MegaBus? They just opened a branch operation here. They'll take you from Columbus to Chicago for $7, which is surreal. Do you have to help pedal their busses or what?

I'm getting heartily sick of the whole "Japan must apologize" thing. The War was over 60 years ago. Most of the people involved are dead, and all of the decision-makers are. There's enough stuff to worry about here and now without fretting over what our grandparents did to one another. I have limited tolerance in general for the grievance industry.

Date: 2007-03-09 12:49 pm (UTC)Their buses are very basic compared to the specialist coach firms - for a while, they used town double-deckers with no toilets, and had to make stops every couple of hours, but they've improved that slightly now. Even so, they're not exactly luxurious and sitting on one for several hours won't be huge fun.
You also get no come-back if things go wrong, beyond the minimum legal requirements; there are strict luggage limits (basically, one bag each); you may have to travel at 5am to get the cheapest fares; and they have no physical presence - everything is done over the phone or online, so it can be hard to complain.
Megabus will get you from A to B, nothing more, but you can't argue with that price.

Date: 2007-03-10 07:05 am (UTC)Anyway, what I'm exercised about here is the current campaign to get Japan to apologize yet again to China and Korea. (http://www.smh.com.au/news/opinion/no-comfort-as-japan-shirks-responsibility/2007/03/09/1173166983977.html) The vast majority of the Japanese now alive had nothing at all to do with any of this, just as the vast majority of the people clamouring for an apology weren't even born at the time. That war is long ended. It's time to get over it.
WRT atomic bombs, it interests me that so much fuss is made over that, yet the anniversary of Curtis LeMay's incineration of Tokyo (March 9-10) in generally forgotten. It was beyond any doubt the most remarkable and completely devastating air attack ever uncorked, but I daresay most people have never heard of it.
