A federal court rules that the Second Amendment applies to individuals rather than to society as a whole. Presumably you can now possess military-grade weapons in DC. This will be exciting.

This is uber-sad. It's like we have no dignity left as a nation anymore. I hope they made Lucas pay out the ass for these.

It's Osama's birthday. I console myself that he's not just older, but also closer to stopping a bomb.

Voting for the 2006 Ursa Major awards has begun. Go to http://www.ursamajorawards.org/Voting.htm to vote.

For those unfamiliar, the UM awards are intended to serve as a way for furry fans to choose the year's best works in movies, literature and art, a furry equivalent of the Hugo awards. The larger the voting pool, the more reliable the awards will be at spotlighting the works most pleasing to furridom.

Voting closes midnight April 14, but don't wait - vote now! Tell all your friends! The more the merrier. Promote your favourites! The Ursa Major Awards can only be a success through the participation of the general public, so help make this the best ever.

The Pastel Rabbits of Inle
!

They had these at Meijer's. Those who recall the Black Rabbit from the film version of Watership Down will understand my amusement :)

It came out when I was in high school, and like everyone else, I loved it. It was a neat movie, fun and trashy, with magnificent music. It came out at the perfect time, right after Vietnam and Watergate, and that whole series of upheavals, when everyone just wanted to have fun. If he'd stopped right there, it'd remain a favourite, and a fond reminder of the last half of the 70s. It's just consumer product now - I can't experience it as anything else.

What is it with postal services? Ours are intending to get rid of many red pillar boxes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillar_box) because they're "too expensive to maintain" and replace them with boring boxy containers. Probably with adverts plastered all over them *sigh*

I note that the pastel rabbits of Inlé are labelled as a "Choking Hazard". "Choked on rabbit of Inlé" sounds like a stupid NetHack death...

That's sad - the pillar boxes are pretty much icons of the Commonwealth. I think everyone recognizes those when they see them.

As long as I can recall, we've had two basic styles of box here - the huge sheetmetal bins that sit on the curbside, and little, more decorative cast iron boxes that mount on poles or walls. The little cast iron boxes are dying out, but to be honest, they're too small to serve as effective maildrops. Within my memory, both used to be painted bright red and blue, with a white star pattern, somewhat remniscent of the flag. They did away with that many years ago, though, and just started painting them all very dark blue, a paint apparently chosen for its durability.
