Part of the excitement of watching F1 is knowing that all around the world, people are setting down to watch the race just like you are.

One of the "F1/ING Australian Grand Prix" signs has been altered to read "F'ING Australian Grand Prix". In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I'll have to believe it was done by a guy named Bruce, holding a 40oz Foster's in his free hand :)

Alexander Wurz is fortunate not to have been decapitated. From the TV view we had here, it looked like Coulthard's sidepod missed him by about 4 inches. Had he hit the brakes a tenth of a second later, that would have made the difference.

It's always risky to draw conclusions from one race, but Lewis Hamilton looks like he'll be deeply impressive. He took no unnecessary chances at all, but was quite willing to go wheel to wheel with Alonso when he needed to. The guy's only 22.

Friend Loganberry points out that Raikonnen is the first Ferrari driver since Mansell to win on his initial outing.

Date: 2007-03-19 01:23 am (UTC)He's extremely highly rated over here, by Jackie Stewart for one, and I predict that Jenson Button in particular is likely to be asked some very hard questions this season.
I remember wandering around the paddock at Donington in, I think, 2002 and overhearing Hamilton - then aged 17 and in Formula Renault - discussing his gearbox problems with a team mechanic. Although I didn't hear much of what he said, what struck me was that he sounded utterly at ease with, and deeply interested in, the subject.
Stewart seems a good driver to compare Hamilton with, actually: he was also a British driver who debuted in a car capable of winning - BRM, 1965 - and ended up third in the championship including a victory at Monza. More races these days mean that two wins would be a reasonable equivalent, and I think Hamilton could well manage that.
