In a democratic, classless society, power must be won rather than inherited. Once won, it must be defended. Such a society selects for aggressive, borderline sociopathic people in positions of power. They out-compete the cooperative, benign types.
Once in power, they deal with problems by the method that has served to get them to power: they treat the outcome as a zero-sum game, and work to make sure that the other side loses completely. A mutually beneficial outcome isn't in the cards.
That's why the 20th century had so many and such impressive wars, and it's why the 21st century promises more of the same.

Wacko Jacko wants to build a 50 foot Mecha-Jackson that shoots laser beams. This is so completely fucked up that it actually restores some small measure of respect for him in my eyes.
