Watching "The World at War". This is easily one of the best and most fascinating things ever shown on television. Almost 45 years since I first saw it, and it's still rivetting. There is some deeply unsettling quality to Olivier's narration that I have trouble putting my finger on, but it leaves me disquieted. I think it's that he's narrating tragedy on a nearly incomprehensible scale, and he has such a quiet, resigned way of doing it. It happened, and nothing can change it. I think that's what I'm getting from that tone of delivery. Whatever it is, it's effective.
