Primarily for the Brits...

If we speak of Jackie Stewart's deeds before he was knighted, e.g. during the 1966 Five Hundred, is it proper to refer to him as Sir Jackie? Ought we to say "Sir Jackie shut his engine down" or "Jackie shut his engine down"?

Just his name, surname or forename according to preference and the tone of the piece. Conferred honours are not retrospective, and he wasn't Sir Jackie in 1966. It would be like referring to "Field-Marshal Montgomery" when writing about his school days.
