Happy Hanukkah to my assorted Jewish friends. There've always been an unusual amount of Jewish furs, for whatever reason. Lately I'm finding that I know a statistically unusual number of ex-Mormons as well, which is a bit of a surprise.

A Hanukkah sale on ham. They meant well. One has to wonder what would have resulted from an Eid sale on ham. The rioting would still be ongoing, I'm sure.
One of the most sought-after items in Christmas light collecting is the 1947 electric menorah from Noma. Right after the war, they were having trouble selling the 8-bulb strings of 15v C6 series-wired bulbs. People wanted the new 120v C7 types, since they were parallel wired, and one bulb could burn out without all of them going dark. About that same time, there was a decision by Noma to try to break into lighted Hanukkah decorations alongside their Xmas market. You can see where this is going. It's one of the few times in history where Sales had an intelligent idea, and Engineering ruined it.

The King of Thailand is 80 today. He seems well-loved by his people. He's the world's longest-lasting head of state, having come to power in 1946, which is weird to contemplate. I remember when I was little, and Hirohito, Franco and Haile Selassie were still around.

For some reason, it used to fascinate me that Hitler, Hirohito and Himmler were all villains, and all had "Hi*" names. That seemed significant to me at the age of about seven or eight.

Well...Commander Fuchida left his memoirs after all. I'll be having one of those when they come out.

Date: 2007-12-05 06:09 pm (UTC)The situation is Thailand is apparently rather complicated. The Thai feel more comfortable with a military junta running things. Apparently there was a big sigh of relief when the last elected government was thrown out. I don't know why they don't just go back to an absolute monarchy like Swaziland has.

Date: 2007-12-05 08:38 pm (UTC)I've theorized before that a monarch is essential to a stable and sane society.
Oh hai

Date: 2007-12-05 08:26 pm (UTC)What really tied it together for me was the name 'Hirohito', which sounded vaguely (to me, at least) like 'Hero:Hitler'. I never said this made any actual sense, or was a reasonable theory or anything. It's one of the bits of my thought processes I recall from that age.
