For friend Loganberry: Kit-Kat bars of the world.

Edit: Actually, Kit-Kat bars of Japan might have been a better title.

Snickers just came out with a snickers bar that's full of caffeine... it's sick.
Sick as in, part of that disgusting 'energy' trend our culture has embraced. Because people are too busy being 'on the go' that they no longer are allowed to sleep.

Oh, that's not entirely related, sorry. But, candy bars and stuff :)

It's not just sleep - the world in general demands much more effort and constant engagement than it did when I was a child. The world was at more of a distance then - news came largely by paper, and weekly magazine, and a half-hour newscast each night. On the downside, it was sometimes frustrating when something interesting happened, and you wanted to know as much as possible, and it would take days sometimes to get the basic facts about distant disasters or wars. On the good side, there was lots of quiet time. You got live TV from the other side of the world only on specific occasions like the Olympics or the like, and there just wasn't any 24 hour news, and no internet, of course. I was way more in touch with the Cat, and the Horses, and the weather and seasons. There was a lot of time spent doing nothing in particular, but just watching the world happen around me.

There seems to be no time to do nothing anymore unless you specifically make it. I think a lot of younger people have never had it, and consequently don't miss it.

I don't know why Japan has this obsession with weird KitKats. You can get some of them here via specialist mail order sellers (or eBay) but I've never bothered as they're so expensive. No sign in those photos of the still-lamented Tiramisu version, though.

It's not like the Japanese are known for weird obsessions or anything...

One of the things that interests me is that each bar has the English name displayed on the wrapper in the size and style that you'd expect for the product name, and then the Japanese translation (I'm assuming that's what it is) superscripted. I think they want it to look like these are sold mainly in the Anglophone world, when as far as I know, they're Japanese only.
