It's revealing that only now, when he's got a major fire to put out, does Obama finally abandon his "alternative patriotism", and give a speech in front of a backdrop of flags. I wonder if he'll start wearing a flag pin in his lapel?

Arthur C. Clarke has bitten the dust.

Jean Todt has resigned from the Scuderia Ferrari, probably forced out by Luca Di Montezemolo. I can't see this ending well.

The unsourced quote of the day: "Then again, when I was watching Predator I didn't think two members of its cast would become governors, either. So you never know."

A virtual tour of der Fuehrerbunker. This is how it looked early in the war. It's strange to see it attractive and brightly-lit. I generally tend to think of it at the very end of the war, as a place of desperation and despair. It looks so normal here.

It's hard sometimes to grasp that WWII was fought by ordinary people. It's become a myth, almost.

Whoa! Some guy built a robot to kill himself! I've been looking for the plans, but can't find them.

A terrorist-crushing robot in action!

It's unseasonably cold here today. I looked in the news to see if Al Gore might be in the area, but I think he left Monday night, after Howard Metzenbaum's funeral.

I noticed that on the news last night, and at first wondered why I'd noticed given that, well, that's what American politicians do. It only occurred to me later that he'd been avoiding it up until now. I think there were eight, four either side of him.

He's gone from zero flags to eight flags - I think that's an adequate measure of his estimate of the emergency. And I'm betting on a lapel pin fairly soon, too.

One of the "things left unsaid" in Obama's speech is that he is now the presumptive next president of the USA.  His remaining problem is attracting enough Republican votes to ensure that he passes his final hurdle in November.  Hence the flags, the obnoxious American Exceptionalism, and the "Wright es mi famiglia" values.

Well, he'd best buy himself a flag factory, because he's gonna need the whole output. A couple of marching bands, and a trained Eagle to sit on his shoulder wouldn't hurt either.

But then people would mistake him for Stephen Colbert, and then they'd stop having Obamagasms.
