I finally have one! And it only took about 14 whacks with the Clue Hammer.
The reason MS's solitaire game insists on an internet connection is so that it can save my game state to a roving profile, so that I can change devices while continuing my game. Which is an interesting idea, if entirely useless. To channel my inner Herethroy, "It is an idea. Which is interesting."
Presumably that can be dealt with in the registry, if I become motivated. (Motivated people generally don't play solitaire, but I digress). Anyway, that's one mystery solved.
