TCM showed 'Le Mans' today. That's got to be the most magnificently evocative racing movie ever made. The director obviously loved and understood racing. I'm struck by the use of sound and silence, by the sudden clatter of Ferrari's old fashioned air hammers when they pit, and by the sequences that focus on pit crews shouting into one another's ears. The camera takes time to people watch, as one does at the track. The rhythm of the film even follows how watches a long race - attention occasionally wonders, only to be pulled back sharply or gently to the racing. It feels very much like going to the track.

Then, I went to the grocery store, only to find that they had 'Gods and Generals' and 'Gettysburg', both 16:9 format, in a boxed set, for only $10. I about fell over. These are the only two Civil War movies I've ever seen that get absolutely everything right - uniforms, equipment, tactics, etc. They're movies about the Civil War itself, as Le Mans is a movie about racing.
