Heh. The Hitler Channel is showing a documentary about how the Detroit auto companies killed the Los Angeles mass transit system.

Did they tie it to WWII or was it "filler" between the war epics?

Earlier in the Bush Admin, I saw a show on the History Channel about "The Presidents" in which they claimed that "The KKK was the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party."  Much of the show was spent trying to show that the Federal govt's suppression of the Democratic Party in the 19th century South was perfectly reasonable.

Considering that the federal goverment had just spilled rivers of blood in a civil war, suppressing the opposition party made good practical sense.

It was that thing about underground places - I don't know the exact title. As it turned out, it was actually about underground Los Angeles. I just got in on the part about the subways.

(It's actually urban myth; one of my professors did much of the research work that destroyed the Snell conspiracy hypothesis. The actual causes are similarly annoying, but pin the blame on infighting neighborhood councils being unwilling to fund needed repairs rather than on evil scary corporations.)

They presented it more as opportunism than outright conspiracy, but the automakers do seem to have bought up transit systems with no intention of maintaining them in working order. I don't especially blame them for it (it's good business, and I'd have done the same) but it makes their current pleading to be bailed out 'for the good of the country' all the more contemptible.
