Sour Milk!

I carefully saved an unopened quart of milk, letting it go sour, but not yet curdled. So, over the past two days, then, the FlasterQat and I have had potato soup, biscuits and milk gravy, and smash-ed potatoes, all made with sour milk. There's a great deal to be said for southern poor people's food :)

Cornbread and buttermilk was one of Elvis's favorites. He called it 'soaks.' Less famous than the peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but I tried it once last year and it was really really good.

Soaks, eh? Good name for it. I need to learn how to make cornbread so I can enjoy that again... it's been far too long since I've had a good old-fashioned bowl of cornbread crumbles in buttermilk. These days, I'd consider it a comfort food and not feel too bad about eating it thanks to it also being a good-for-the-body snack.
