Her Majesty's Navy is going to help to repatriate stranded Britons. The 'Ark Royal' seems frankly an odd choice for such a mission - this looks more like a job for troop carriers or landing ships. On the other hoof, one supposes that the 'Ark Royal' may have been chosen for PR reasons, to boost morale. This is something the American Navy is peculiarly well-equipped to help with, although of course we won't, not under Obama.

Date: 2010-04-19 01:11 pm (UTC)Well, we are sending HMS Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ocean_%28L12%29) and HMS Albion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Albion_%28L14%29) as well. As for the Ark Royal, it probably is partly PR-related, but the ship happened to be quite conveniently situated (off Scotland) so can be got into position quite quickly.
