Quite obviously, seismic retrofitting should become the predominant industry in New Zealand for the remainder of the 21st century. This kind of shocking death and destruction could have been almost completely prevented save for an evident ubiquitous "it can't happen here" mindset. I wonder now if Australia has a similar percentage of unsafe buildings in its cities. The ancient churches - I can understand their vulnerability - but the more modern structures? This is a disaster that didn't have to happen...
