More volcano pictures from the Boston Spheroid!

Wahoo! Ohio takes the first step towards curtailing the insatiable greed of the unions! We're gonna beat Wisconsin after all :)

Kevin Bacon, quoted in the article, is the State Senator from my district, and a mighty Tea Party man, newly elected this term.

I'd have loved to have gone down and protested in favour of SB 5, but unlike the public employees who turned out by the thousands, I can't take off work whenever I feel like to to go disrupt traffic and bang on a drum. The very size of the demonstrations against it show how badly this bill was needed to restore some measure of fairness and sanity.

That seems a very odd bill, even leaving aside my personal prejudices. Over here employers' organisations are lobbying hard for compulsory neutral arbitration.

Honestly, arbitration was doing a pretty reasonable job, but it shouldn't trump the results of an election. Public employees are allowed to vote, like anyone else. If they feel that their conditions of employment are unfair, an election is the sovereign remedy. If the people vote for a government that wants to cut costs, then arbitrators and unions should not be allowed to thwart that result.

That seems to be saying that a winning party's platform, so long as it's legal, should be immune from disruption by any special interest group.

It's not one little bit different from the tactics that the Democrats used in ramming though Obamacare. They seem to find wimmer takes all rather less laudable when they're on the receiving end. To be honest, were it not for Obamacare, I'd probably not support such fire and sword politics. Right now, I want to smash and destroy the things that the left holds dear. Once we've trampled enough of the things that they call 'progressive', and drug them through the mud, then it'll be time to calm down and return to bipartisan, concensus politics of the sort that obtained before these last two years.

With all due respect, "The very size of the demonstrations against it show how badly this bill was needed to restore some measure of fairness and sanity." is a terrible way to phrase things in a democracy.

I'd say that a bill to kill off every third resident of a state would get large demonstrations, wouldn't you?

That's not what was being decided here, though. What was being debated here was whether state employees will be judged by how well they do their jobs rather than by how long they've held them, and whether they'll be required to report to work rather than taking off and inconveniencing the public every time they feel soemthing isn't exactly to their liking. The situation has become desperately unbalanced of late, with public employees basically bein beholden to no-one in how and whether they do their jobs. The fact that they can take off at will to go to a protest is an illustration of that fact. This bill goes some long way to redress those injustices.

Yeah, this is why you should never, ever, ever vote for a Republican, no matter how sensible this individual might seem. Whatever issue they've decided to talk about, AMAZINGLY the cure is always the same old crap.

There's not an iota of difference between the tea party and every other set of fake republican talking points.

Except that the Tea Party actually means it, and is willing to act.
