Womble Stack
Jul. 19th, 2012 09:08 pmThe hot, dry weather (and perhaps the lack of mowing as well) seems to have benefited the wild chicory hereabouts. The lovely pale lavender-blue flowers are literally everywhere - in yards, in vacant lots, in pastures, growing alongside the road, etc. If I liked chicory in coffee (I dislike both, sadly) I could harvest a lifetime supply of it this summer. I'm told the leaves are good boiled in a change of water and used in tomato sauces. I may try that.
Tiger lilies are out in force as well. In my experience they like moist ground, but that doesn't seem to have hurt them. On the Dublin Road, there's a stretch a mile and a half long, easily, where the ditch and fenceline is solid tiger lilies several yards deep.
