The curiously-named Beloit University publishes these lists each year to help make professors aware of cultural references that incoming freshmen are unlikely to understand. Some of these are just fascinating to reflect upon.

That "Mindset List" Beloit publishes makes fascinating reading from over here. Some things translate pretty well (watching TV anywhere but a TV), some things aren't part of our cultural history but are obvious enough (the Kennedys being replaced by Michael Jackson), some things are straightforward but irrelevant to almost everyone here (Lou Gehrig's ex-record) and some things are utterly bewildering (it took me some while to work out who "Selena" might be).

I can't resist the thought that for a small but substantial minority of the newcomers, "the Twilight zone" might have more to do with ponies than vampires. =:P
