What on earth does Assad hope to gain from antagonizing Turkey? I can accept that the first shell that blew up those villagers was an accident, but the subsequent ones are, if not deliberate, then most remarkably reckless. He's ass-deep in alligators already, and I can't imagine how he could hope to benefit from making more enemies.

This has been bothering me for some little bit now, and I'd appreciate hearing what others think.

It's actually the remains of Al Qaeda that's shelling Turkey, hoping to start a war and draw NATO into it.  Link to "fringe" blog

If Assad can draw Turkey into things, it supports his position that outside agitators are behind the unrest, and nothing brings a country together like an invading army.
