Something that has just occurred to me about the EU winning the Nobel Peace Prize: As I noted back in 2009 when Obama won, that meant that America now had a Peace Prize winner who had fired off more cruise missiles than all the other winners COMBINED! This seemed a peculiarly American distinction, and one which I expected to probably stand forever. Now, of course, with the EU a winner, that honour is in peril. If the EU continues onward as an entity, then of course they can keep on shooting missiles long after Obama has left office. I'm troubled.

*****

So, now out of the past four winners, two have been quite blatant attempts to purchase political influence. It's an award that still has a reasonable amount of prestige associated with it, but stuff like this abrades that pretty fast.

This is why I need to become a mad scientist with a volcano lair, so that I can also win the Nobel Peace Prize by failing to initiate global thermonuclear war.
