A cold, soaking rain continues to fall here. It may turn to snow later tonight. It pleases me. I generally mourn the coming of winter, but this year it works for me. I want to start decorating for Christmas, but I suppose I should have the propriety to wait until at least Halloween is over. Last year I had only my smallest tree, and a single string of lights, and had to make myself do that. I want this year to be better.

I'm delighted to discover that the Cathedral of St Bertrand de Comminges, as mentioned in the M.R. James story "The Scrapbook of Canon Alberic" is a real place, and exists substantially as in the tale, right down to the stuffed crocodile. Stuff like this always takes me unawares.

I have ham hocks in the slow cooker, which I will cook all night until they're ready to fall apart. In the morning, I shall make pea soup.

The general concensus seems to be that the Pittsburgh Steelers' new uniforms make them look like bees. That they do, but I think they're cool also, in a very 1930s way.
