So, I have a bruised, badly-discoloured place on my upper arm, but it's not sore, and I don't recall having anything happen to it. I wonder if a blood vessel just spontaneously burst or something? Slowly, the pieces are wearing out...

Actually, all those burgers that don't go bad after x years don't go bad simply because they're allowed to dry out. A homemade burger will behave similarly. Also, if you store them in something like a ziploc bag, they'll mold and decay.
