Woot! Meijer's had fresh okra last night, along with Roma tomatoes so ripe that they were on the cusp of being rotten. I'm making a big pot of chicken gumbo even as I type :)

I'm not sure how much okra is eaten outside of the States. Even here, it's pretty much a southern food, like grits or hominy or pokeweed.

I don't think southerners usually put tomatoes in their gumbo, but I like that.

In the UK, okra is reasonably easy to get hold of in shops catering to Caribbean or Indian/Pakistani communities, and I think those from certain parts of the Middle East too. It's certainly not something you see every day in ordinary shops, though.
