Cuba, of all places, passes a law against animal cruelty. I am heartened.

So, a few years back, three unfortunate Horses were discovered at the ruins of a villa just to the north of Pompeii. One was harnessed.

Now they've got the cart he was going to pull. It is very obviously a special, expensive ceremonial cart, with loads of decorations. I wonder what happened? Was he getting ready to pull the cart to a safe place in view of the ongoing eruption? Was there a wedding or special occasion that day, and they decided to go through with it regardless? Were the other two part of a troika who hadn't been harnessed yet, or were they going to carry outriders? Or, perhaps the situation was scarey enough that they brought along a little herd of stablemates for reassurance - Horses always feel safer with friends.

At any rate, interesting but sad.

I had no idea that there existed man-made geysers. Quite attractive as well.

With all of the limestone that underlies West Trumpistan, we could probably sink a nuclear reactor for heat, and make geysers that form cool flowstone structures here too. Ours could even be radioactive!

Lynchburg is being evacuated in anticipation of a potential dam failure. While that's distressing, I'm satisfied to note that pets are going to be provided for in the evacuation centres. That's been a longstanding issue here, is the expectation of the authorities that people will just leave their pets behind. In the old days, when they didn't expect people to evacuate unless their lives were in actual danger, that may have worked. The modern practice seems to be to take no chances of any sort whatsoever, so if we're to accept having our lives disrupted on the offchance that someone might possibly get hurt, it seems sensible to have higher expectations of what the authorities will provide.

Dude with samurai sword attacks ice cream truck. Alcohol may have been involved. :)

Sad that the guy got shot, but there's a certain irony in that he had come to see "cowboy culture". For whatever reason, many Germans seem fascinated by cowboys and indians.

Oh yes! I need one of these!

McDonald's are on my shitlist again. There's no excuse for that sort of behaviour.

Why does the Rose of Lancaster appear on the Norwegian Intelligence Service's arms? The ravens are quite obviously Hugin and Munin, (and just *so* satisfyingly appropriate), but why the rose? Norway had a single Plantagenet queen back around 1400, it seems, but that's surely not it. It's not in the national arms, nor in the military's (of which Intelligence is a part) either.

So, I needed eggs. I had no fewer than four separate brands of free-range eggs from which to choose. Most of the rest were "cage free". The only ones where the packaging didn't give some assurance of the chickens' living conditions were the big semi-generic 100 egg institutional packages. And this was at Giant Eagle. Only a few years back, the only way you could get even cage free eggs was at places like Whole Foods or Fresh Thyme, or by driving out into the country to buy them directly. I have to conclude that it's market pressure at work crowding out the battery-hen eggs. That's reassuring.
