D-Day

It's been three quarters of a century since D-Day. That seems hard to believe. I've known so many men who took part in that, even an ex-boss who parachuted into battle with the 101st, all of them gone now.

POTUS gave a mighty speech:

"The G.I's who boarded the landing craft that morning knew that they carried on their shoulders not just the pack of a soldier, but the fate of the world."

Holy crap, Trump actually followed a pre-written speech? He doesn't sound half as fucking dumb when he stays on script - that line is beautiful.

Personally, I think the belief that WW2 is a "good war" is a bit of myth, since it basically decided the fates of tens of millions without regard to their wishes, and places such as Eastern Europe and northern Korea weren't necessarily "saved from tyranny." I also believe forcing the Axis to surrender unconditionally wasn't a great idea since, for instance, there were many German generals dissident of Hitler, and it just prolonged the war.

Personally, I prefer the alternate-alternate history in The Man in the High Castle of its version of The Grasshopper Lies Heavy where FDR only serves two terms and one of his brain trustees Rexford Tugwell succeeds him as President, entering WW2 early and winning the war prematurely, the Soviet Union collapses early, Jiang Jieshi remains in control of China, etc.

But to each their own, I suppose.
